- HOW TO CERTIFY
- LIVE BETTER
The Healthy Building Certificate (HBS) is a Certification for projects, buildings, professionals, and products; as well as a system for the support and maintenance of a private sector construction ethic, which objective is to assure and validate that living environments are healthy and/or promote well-being. The HBC is awarded to projects, to buildings, and to professionals, as well as to products and methods of maintenance that promote human health and well-being.
In the case of projects, the HBS certifies that a projected living space to be built takes into account, in it’s planning, the materials, construction techniques, and physical processes that make sure to avoid negative health effects for the occupants of the finished space
The HBS for buildings certifies that the space built complies with rigorous and measurable standards of sustainability and well-being, providing the optimal strategy to avoid possible harmful interactions with those who live and work there
Professionals certified with the HBS are qualified to plan, design, lead the actual construction, coordinate the certification process, survey and assess, and, in the case of health professionals, to advise their patients about the best practices for the maintenance of healthy spaces.
Products certified with the HBS meet stringent standards of quality and health regarding their composition and essential characteristics, such that they may be of use in initial construction, as well as renovation, avoiding ill health effects for those who apply them, as well as for final occupants.
Materials and their methods of handling, in regard to building maintenance will receive the HBS if they meet or exceed the certification’s standard of health when used according to their intended purpose, guaranteeing, in this way, that activities involving cleaning and general maintenance don’t employ products or techniques that harm the health of their users.
The Healthy Building Certificate is an elective program. Architects, engineers, project designers, builders, and professionals in general voluntarily submit for assessment their planned projects, finished buildings, products, and/or processes with the goal of guaranteeing the health and well-being of their clients and end users, while at the same time generating a strong market advantage for themselves.
In order to receive the HBS Certification it is required that the prospective project, building, professional, product, and/or process is submitted to rigorous tests and verification. This is achieved by analyzing the technical documents and drafts, in the case of assessing projects; by measurement of physical and chemical properties and characteristics, in the case of inspecting buildings; by means of written and oral tests, in the case of evaluating trained professionals; physical/chemical measurements would be used in the case of product certification; and a combination of all techniques would be used in the case of maintenance practices.
It is important to emphasize that the HBS accreditation system is driven by rigorous international standards of wellness, validated by industry professionals, health professionals, researchers, and investigators from renowned academic institutions and esteemed trade associations, among others whose fields directly relate to the objective of certification.
